Is an Oasis reunion in the works, or is it but a mirage?
On Sunday, the beloved but embattled Britpop band shared a short video clip on X, teasing the arrival of something at 8 a.m. at “27.08.24” (August 27, 2024).
Significantly, both Liam and Noel Gallagher — the band’s frontman and primary songwriter, respectively — shared the teaser, suggesting that the two brothers may finally be willing to bury the ignominious feud that caused the band to break up 15 years ago.
“I never did like that word FORMER,” Liam wrote on X, adding more fuel to the rumour that Oasis is “definitely maybe” set to return to the stage.
An Oasis reunion, of course, would be a huge boon for rock fans around the world, who have clamoured for the band’s return since the infamous backstage “row” at the Paris Rock En Seine festival in 2009.
Formed in Manchester in 1991, the band rose to global success in the mid-‘90s with hits like “Wonderwall,” “Champagne Supernova” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger.” Further buoyed by their bitter rivalry with the London rock outfit Blur, Oasis came to define the Britpop phenomenon, which offered a brighter alternative to the grunge music that dominated the airwave in the first half of the decade.
But what might an Oasis reunion tour actually look like?
According to a Sunday Times report that cites anonymous industry insiders, the band will embark on a tour next year that could include up to 10 shows at London’s Wembley Stadium — that would be two more than Taylor Swift’s recent London run — plus a potential spot at Glastonbury. There is no indication at this point if such a tour would include Canada dates.
Beyond the Gallaghers, the other original Oasis members — drummer Tony McCaroll, bassist Paul McGuigan and guitarist Paul Arthurs — are not expected to join the reunion, The Sun reported on Sunday.
Hopefully, more details will emerge tomorrow morning. In the mean time, here’s a look at how fans on social media are reacting to the news:
